The Guild Inn; Scarborough, ON.
Nestled high on the Scarborough Bluffs in Ontario Canada is the historic Guild Inn. Surrounded by lush forest, beautiful statues, objects d' art, and a panoramic view of L. Ontario, the Guild was a favorite spot for weddings and other joyous occasions. Movies and t.v programs such as the Skulls, and Relic Hunter have been filmed there. Famous guests include Canadian PM Lester B. Pearson, Burt Reynolds, Kathleen Turner, Christopher Reeve, Sir Lawrence Olivier, Lorne Greene, Kevin Sorbo and many others. Guests enjoyed the tranquil and romantic ambiance provide by this charming old hotel. However, few people other than the former staff know of the Guild's past and perhaps current hauntings. The Guild Inn was officially closed to the public in October 2001 and it remains to be announced what will become of the hotel and property.

sitting in the dark drinking coffee gone cold
suffocating on cigarette smoke and all the things we can't say
down at the beach where the kids smoke weed we say our roundabout goodbyes
we build a frame around the elephant in the room with small talk and light chatter
i've said none of the things i wanted to.
and then its time to go |

| Is Obama a Muslim? Why would it matter if he were? |
[Jul. 23rd, 2008|10:22 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | thoughtful | ] | I just had one of those "straw that broke the camel's back" moments when I was reading a friend's journal where it was stated that Obama being a Muslim was "a myth that has been thoroughly debunked."
See, the entire way in which the rumors about Obama's being Muslim has been handled has been grating on my nerves for quite some time. There are two ways that the statement "Obama is not a Muslim" can be interpreted. One is as a pure statement of fact, with no value judgment attached. With this interpretation, there is no underlying implication about Muslims or Islam, simply a correction of an erroneous belief that Obama is Muslim. The second meaning this statement can have is that there would something terribly wrong with his running for President if he in fact were a Muslim. The second interpretation contains a very loaded value judgment and reflects some very serious ugliness in how a lot of Americans view Islam, and for that matter, different religions in general.
So why do we pretend that the second interpretation doesn't exist? Why does it always seem as if Obama and his supporters view being a Muslim as some sort of accusation, as something that's so completely undesirable that they must take great pains to distance Obama from any hint of being associated with Islam? Put another way, why does the term "Muslim" seem to take on the same underlying tone as the word "Communist" in the 1950's or the word "witch" in 1692 Salem, Massachusetts?

Hey I'm arrogant enough to start a meme. I'm obsessed with http://someecards.com and can't stop finding cards that describe me in really amazingly unflattering ways.
( Here are my top five! )
You should post your top five self-descriptive e-cards, too, if you frequent some e-cards and/or this sounds like fun. |

most of these monuments were from the children's section of Holy Sepulcher Cemetery. they hold very dear to my heart, as these were mostly stillborns and children who never made it past the age of 2. the atmosphere was so overwhelming that i broke down in tears. i think what broke me down was this one grave that had two boxes of allan's apple juice on it, one was drunk, and the other left i am assuming for the toddler that died. such pain and remorse and loss. it was moving and humbling and really reminded me how lucky i am to not know this kind of suffering. |

I am so pleased about actually earning money. I think life is easier this way. Now I can buy a computer of my own, which is something I haven't had since I moved in with assafr. I think I'll feel a lot better with a computer of my own. And maybe rollerblades. :D
Other than that, I've been having a physical and mental sort of breakdown. It's no fun. |

i want to write a letter to someone expressing my disappointment what's happened to our city's museum. it has been so dumbed down, i actually felt patronized. who are they gearing this stuff towards?! it was kind of like wikipedia only it cost $22 to get in and i think wikipedia may actually be more in depth. the new building also seems to be too big, there is so much empty space and not nearly as many artifacts as there used to be. instead there are more dioramas and long, unnecessary stories that are supposed to be contextual.
but that's not even the worst part. during their horrifying renovation they moved the entrance of the museum from Philosopher's walk (a beautiful old entrance with huge wooden doors and a big mosaic dome ceiling connecting to the university lanes) to "Million Dollar Mile", a strip of the street also occupied by prada, gucci and club monaco. how very appropriate.
the rom has never been an "amazing" museum, but at least it used to have some dignity. now i just think it's an embarrassment. |

| uncle larry |
[Jul. 22nd, 2008|08:32 pm] |
 larry; sugar grove, IL
UNCLE LARRY
there are some men who have never been anything but.
whiskey drinking, shade wearing naturals. perfect hair. don't give a damn demeanor.
and everything solved from the inside.
oh, the rest of the family thinks men like these are truly fucked up.
but men like these: they sure as fuck know the truth.
and damnit, they don't intend to reveal their secrets no matter who cries, who dies, or otherwise loses their cool.
men like these can fix a broken down set of wheels, scramble eggs, and find anything on a world map...all before 9am.
men like these would punch a priest who crossed them wrong. duct tape their thumbs back on after a chainsaw mishap. drive themselves to a nearby hospital after a heart attack.
men like these wear shades because they'd impregnate women
simply by looking in to their eyes.
i've always envied men like these. real men. men who don't give a fuck who says what, as long as it doesn't fuck with their day, their drinks, or their view.
my uncle larry is like that.
and God bless him.
i'm sure he does in his own ways...
any one of us would be lucky to crawl in to his skin and walk around for a day or two.
must be fucking exhilirating. |
